2The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3:2 This man came to Jesusf13 by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."
3:2this one came unto him by night, and said to him, `Rabbi, we have known that from God thou hast come -- a teacher, for no one these signs is able to do that thou dost, if God may not be with him.`
3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
3:3 Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born againf14 he cannot see the kingdom of God."
3:3Jesus answered and said to him, `Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born from above, he is not able to see the reign of God;`
4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
3:4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
3:4Nicodemus saith unto him, `How is a man able to be born, being old? is he able into the womb of his mother a second time to enter, and to be born?`
5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
3:5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
3:5Jesus answered, `Verily, verily, I say to thee, If any one may not be born of water, and the Spirit, he is not able to enter into the reign of God;
6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.f15
3:6that which hath been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which hath been born of the Spirit is spirit.
7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
3:7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'Youf16 must be born again.'
3:7`Thou mayest not wonder that I said to thee, It behoveth you to be born from above;
8The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
3:8 The windf17 blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
3:8the Spirit where he willeth doth blow, and his voice thou dost hear, but thou hast not known whence he cometh, and whither he goeth; thus is every one who hath been born of the Spirit.`
9Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
3:9 Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?"
3:9Nicodemus answered and said to him, `How are these things able to happen?`
10Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
3:10 Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?
3:10Jesus answered and said to him, `Thou art the teacher of Israel -- and these things thou dost not know!
11Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
3:11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but youf18 do not receive our testimony.
3:11`Verily, verily, I say to thee -- What we have known we speak, and what we have seen we testify, and our testimony ye do not receive;
12If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you [of] heavenly things?
3:12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
3:12if the earthly things I said to you, and ye do not believe, how, if I shall say to you the heavenly things, will ye believe?
13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, [even] the Son of man which is in heaven.
3:13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.f19
3:13and no one hath gone up to the heaven, except he who out of the heaven came down -- the Son of Man who is in the heaven.
14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
3:14`And as Moses did lift up the serpent in the wilderness, so it behoveth the Son of Man to be lifted up,
15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
3:15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.f20
3:15that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during,
16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
3:16 "For God so loved the world,f21 that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
3:16for God did so love the world, that His Son -- the only begotten -- He gave, that every one who is believing in him may not perish, but may have life age-during.
17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
3:17For God did not send His Son to the world that he may judge the world, but that the world may be saved through him;
18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
3:18he who is believing in him is not judged, but he who is not believing hath been judged already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
3:19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
3:19`And this is the judgment, that the light hath come to the world, and men did love the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil;
20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
3:20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
3:20for every one who is doing wicked things hateth the light, and doth not come unto the light, that his works may not be detected;
21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
3:21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
3:21but he who is doing the truth doth come to the light, that his works may be manifested, that in God they are having been wrought.`
22¶ After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
3:22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing.
3:22After these things came Jesus and his disciples to the land of Judea, and there he did tarry with them, and was baptizing;
23¶ And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
3:23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized
3:23and John was also baptizing in Aenon, nigh to Salem, because there were many waters there, and they were coming and were being baptized --
24For John was not yet cast into prison.
3:24 (for John had not yet been put in prison).
3:24for John was not yet cast into the prison --
25¶ Then there arose a question between [some] of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.
3:25 Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification.
3:25there arose then a question from the disciples of John with [some] Jews about purifying,
26And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all [men] come to him.
3:26 And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness--look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him."
3:26and they came unto John, and said to him, `Rabbi, he who was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou didst testify, lo, this one is baptizing, and all are coming unto him.`
27John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
3:27 John answered, "A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.
3:27John answered and said, `A man is not able to receive anything, if it may not have been given him from the heaven;
28Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
3:28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.'
3:28ye yourselves do testify to me that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am having been sent before him;
29He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
3:29 The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete.
3:29he who is having the bride is bridegroom, and the friend of the bridegroom, who is standing and hearing him, with joy doth rejoice because of the voice of the bridegroom; this, then, my joy hath been fulfilled.
30He must increase, but I [must] decrease.
3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease."f22
3:30`Him it behoveth to increase, and me to become less;

31He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
3:31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all.
3:31he who from above is coming is above all; he who is from the earth, from the earth he is, and from the earth he speaketh; he who from the heaven is coming is above all.
32And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
3:32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.
3:32`And what he hath seen and heard this he doth testify, and his testimony none receiveth;
33He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
3:33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.
3:33he who is receiving his testimony did seal that God is true;
34For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure [unto him].
3:34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
3:34for he whom God sent, the sayings of God he speaketh; for not by measure doth God give the Spirit;
35The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
3:35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
3:35the Father doth love the Son, and all things hath given into his hand;
36He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
3:36he who is believing in the Son, hath life age-during; and he who is not believing the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God doth remain upon him.`
